Horizons Food Pantry/Trift Store/Exchange Minutes

Friday, February 20th, 2009

First meeting of the committee was held on January 29. Members present were Leader LaVonne Wood, Harlan & Delores Stoley, Chris McGowan, Peggy Fausett and Mary Alger. Most of the meeting was spent discussing a food pantry. Each person has assignments for the next meeting which will be held on Feb. 3.

The Feb. 3 meeting was held at LaVonne’s home. Those present were LaVonne Wood, Chris McGowan, Craig and Peggy Fausett and Mary Alger. LaVonne was chosen chairperson and Mary secretary. Reports were given. LaVonne had talked with Richard Harter about the Northwestern building. He would rent it for $300 per month. This would include all expenses (lights, heat, etc.). Peggy attended the monthly meeting of the county comissioners. An area in the Straight building could be used for a food pantry at no cost. Mary checked with the school but the Kass building has been given to the fire dept. so is not an option.

Mary checked with Kay at the S.D. Food Bank and will have more info at the next meeting.

Chris shared info about the food bank her mother helps with in Chicago. Discussion was held on the need for non-profit status, using letters to each church every month to ask for donations, groups that would be able to help with food drives and how to staff a food bank and how to distribute the food.

Discussion was also held on the thrift store/exchange but we all felt a food pantry was the most urgent project.

The next meeting will be at LaVonne’s home on Feb. 23rd. Anyone is welcome to come. If you have suggestions please call Peggy 852-2500 or Mary 852-2960.

Chamber of Commerce and Community Resource Group

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

The Chamber of Commerce and Community Resource Horizons group met on 2/10/09 at the Rinehart Office Building. Those in attendance were: Richard, Deb, Joyce, Bonita, Connie, Mike and Cheryl. We began the evening with refreshments served by most members. It was Doc Boller’ 90th Birthday, but since they had celebrated with family Rapid City over the weekend, we did not have birthday cake with them.

Richard called the meeting to order. Joyce shared some more information about the recycling bins located in Pierre. We are wondering the cost of having one of those placed somewhere in Highmore. That will be researched to find out how this service is handled.

Following that, there was much discussion about the survey for the Resource
Center. After the topics for the survey were narrowed down, there were new
discussions centered around taking a part of the survey during the Crop Show.

It was decided that we would ask Horizons if the four groups could have a
two table booth plus electricity. Connie felt that we could easily do the survey
on laptops and store the information. That would make compiling the results
easier. We will also do surveys filled in by hand if preferred. It was decided
to have some sort of prize drawing for those completing the survey. Those
details will be at our next meeting.

Having phone contact with those wanting to use the resource center was
our next topic. There were many suggestions for this, such as having a cell phone
dedicated to the task. Many other options were added, but some of those would
require permission of the groups involved. This service will be needed for
this venture to be successful and will require more time to get ironed out.
We also discussed how to get the service out into the community via a
directory. These could be mailed out, placed in the senior center, library,
school, churches, local bulletin boards, or delivered door to door.

This wrapped up the meeting. Our next meeting is scheduled for 2/24/09,
7:00 PM at the Rinehart Office Building. At this time we will finalize the
plans for the survey and drawing to the held at the Crop Show.
